Accommodation

For anyone wishing to book accommodation at the St John’s hotel on Wednesday 20 May, there is a preferential rate available of £99 B&B inc VAT.  However, places are limited and will be offered on a first come first served basis.

The online registration system will ask if you have booked accommodation at St John’s on 20 May, if you have done so, please ensure you complete this section of the form to prevent being allocated to an overspill hotel.

Only delegates attending the event for both days are entitled to accommodation on Thursday 21 May. 
As with previous years, there are a number of overspill hotels.  Allocation to overspill hotels is based on last year's distribution and every effort is made to allocate accommodation as fairly as possible.

1 . Critical Friendship - Roles and Responsibilities

Presenter(s): Alwyn Morgan, Mandy Kelly and Kevin McCooke
Overview: This seminar will explore the role of the critical friend (CF) and particularly within the context of working in partnership with the DCSF, local authority and club.
Main aims:
  • To provide an insight into the role of the CF.
  • To review the expectations that the DCSF, local authority and club have of the CFs.
  • To explore how the key partners move forward together and to see how an effective partnership can be to the benefit of all concerned.

2. PfS and National Policy

Overview: Core PfS and PfS style provision is contributing to the delivery of a range of National Policies locally.
Main aims:
  • To show how PfS supports School Improvement and National Strategies.
  • How PfS is relevant to other and developing National Policies – Extended Services, 21st Century Schools etc.
  • How we translate National Policy locally and make best use of PfS.

3. CPD Opportunities

Overview: An overview of the RHA approach to professional development including a review of the first year’s programme and the plan for the next two years.
Main aims:
  • To share information about RHA approach to CPD.
  • To share the benefits of two programmes; Leadership and Mentoring.
  • To provide an opportunity to share ideas about future CPD opportunities

Overview: After 12 years the number of PfS centres has reached its current maximum of 162. But that’s not the end! Let’s smash the ‘glass ceiling’ by looking at innovatory and developmental ideas.

  • To hear case studies of exciting and innovative developments.
  • To explore the management and funding models which have facilitated innovation and development.

6. Quality Assurance

Overview: An introduction to the new self-evaluation framework (formerly Code of Practice) and an opportunity to explore the quality themes and the nature of evidence.
Aim:
  • To offer an introduction to the new ELO Framework particularly in relation to the quality themes, criteria and ‘forming the judgement’ questions.
  • To consider some examples of how evidence supports self-evaluation.
  • To help both new centre managers to begin to engage and support more experienced managers and officers when using the framework with others.

Overview: This seminar will outline how PfS has been integrated and is integral to West Bromwich Albion's Community Programme.  It will also highlight the integrated of sport and education.

  • An investigation into how PfS and Community-led Education programmes can compliment Club's Community Strategies. 
  • Describing how partnerships are reviewed, developed and sustained.

8. RHA Communication and Marketing PfS

Overview: The seminar will focus on Communication Strategies and marketing techniques and how RHA supports PfS centres in these areas. Part of the session will focus on how the MDA area of the website can assist in these areas.
Aim:
  • To create an awareness of how Communication strategies can improve the services we offer.
  • To encourage greater use of the virtual learning/MDA section of the website.
  • To improve marketing strategies and knowledge of the PfS brand, locally and nationally.

To consider how PfS can share and contribute to these assessments without losing any of what makes PfS so great. 3. Working in partnership with a cricket club

Overview: How PfS at the Oval works in partnership with both Surrey Cricket in the community and with the club as a whole

Overview: A workshop describing the new Children’s University structure and how Playing for Success Manchester has recently established a Manchester CU.

6. Relaxing for Success - DOUBLE SESSION

Overview: Staff in PfS Kirklees have taken up relaxed kids training and are offering packages to schools on different types of relaxation techniques and pre exam de stressing.  We will outline what we offer to schools to income generate and show practical examples of techniques and methods.  Share income generating ideas or come and relax for success with us!

Overview: In January 2009 PfS NL started a first pilot group at the stadium of FC Swolle.  Soon 3 other Dutch football clubs will follow.  In this workshop, we describe the steps we took to get so far.

Overview: This workshop will be how to make literacy fun. Phil will take you through a series of exciting and fun activities, using parts of speech as drivers of improvement in students' writing. Many of these have a kinaestheitc bent and have been trialed successfully with kids at risk of underachievement.

26. Double Club Languages

Overview: The workshop will outline how the Arsenal Double Club has taken the success of their literacy and numeracy programmes into Modern Foreign Languages and developed French, Spanish and German modules at both Primary and Secondary levels.

Thanks to funding from the DCSF, Arsenal is now building on its existing MFL resources and will be supporting other sports clubs/PFS centres around the country, wanting to do something similar.

Overview: Music song-writing and ‘live’ percussion workshop. Using music to explore numeracy and literacy concepts. How to compose lyrics, create and record a backing track.
